Bachelorette Party 101

Do decorate.
Don't stress about making it look like it came straight from a Martha Stewart Catalog.

Do enjoy adult beverages.
Don't be "that girl" and drink too many. Keep it together, ladies!

Do what you did when you were 10 years old; jump off the dock, dunk one another, make "hair art".
Don't forget, when dunking the bride-to-be, that payback is around the corner.

Do take a handful of group pictures to document all the lovely women that made the day what it was.
Don't care that you didn't shower that day.

Do play a game that involves everyone.
Don't play 10 of them and annoy your guests.

Do buy her gifts even if she says she doesn't want any. Be creative!
Don't ask the bride directly what size she is. A) Spoiler alert B) Ask the MOH

Do what every friend should and always be there for the bride-to-be; pre-wedding, wedding day, and years to come!

8/18

Just like that, my vacation time back in Minnesota is over. I am currently experiencing what I like to call a "happiness hangover", and the tears that were shed as I left the land of 10,000 lakes could have made it the land of 12,000. Bittersweet times, my friends, but boy were some wonderful memories made!

My training was a little wonky this week as I didn't want running to get in the way of enjoying my time at home doing what I wanted to do. And eat. Remember those few pounds lost on my cleanse? They're back and they brought some friends, too! More on nutrition in a future post.

I spent most of my time at the lake and was reminded quickly at just how humid it gets. HOLY. No matter what time I set out, I would return with dripping sweat and a face that resembled a tomato. I started the drive back to Denver on Sunday but stopped in Omaha for the night. Thanks to my generous friend, Ali, I stayed at her apartment and took advantage of her building's workout room.

Monday - 10 mile bike ride, Jillian Michaels Ab Video

This is the face of a girl who went off road biking at the lake and may or may not have gotten lost in the forest. Katniss wouldn't be proud.
Back on the road. Phew!

Tuesday - 2 mile run

Wednesday - 7 mile run

Thursday - 15 mile run

Friday - 1.5 mile walk, Full Body Circuit

Saturday - rest

Sunday - 4 mile run

Oh treadmill, I didn't miss you!
Can't beat this scenery

Like Clockwork

Before I dive in to this piece, let me just show you where I am writing from today. If the lake were a person, you bet I would send it flowers for always being my safe place to land.

I use to love when mid-August rolled around and my mom would take me back to school shopping. Whether it was at Target for college-ruled notebooks of assorted colors or Macy’s for the latest fashion trends, the feeling of a new beginning and start of a new year was enticing. I use to make up how the first day of school would play out, who my group of friends were and what team I would make for soccer. Even the days where I was reminded that the yellow bus was taking me to math class, the excitement of beginning a new chapter overlooked it all.

By the end of September, all those feelings had packed up and headed out. Routine kicked in, homework started getting in the way of TRL and my time on AIM. I couldn’t wait for Christmas break, and then Spring break, and then the last day of school because that meant it was back to weekends at the lake with a balanced diet of smores and Coca-Cola.

Like clockwork, mid-August rolled around and those confetti-sprinkled feelings were back. I was happy and excited and anxious and ready for the new beginning to start…again. But did it ever really end?

***

The past couple months have felt like a wave for me. One day I would be riding it smoothly and the next I was being pulled under and swooshed around. I was in a funk; confused and feeling stuck with the parts of my life that I wanted to keep progressing towards something even I didn’t know.

The uncertainty of the future is what kills me. I fall for it every time.

In those times of feeling lonely I was reassured that I’m not alone. My friends called, texted, filled up my wine glass and brought me on the dance floor. In those conversations where borders were broken down and the rawness of my emotions were exposed, it was as I was hit over the head and reminded of things – friendships are vital when rescuing yourself back to you and new beginnings are always around the corner.

I moved into a new home with a new roommate and it’s as if my attitude took a complete 180. I love Denver again and feel as though I just moved here - I want to explore, explore, explore. I love the new walls that surround me and the roommate that is like a breath of fresh air. I love being able to walk to my favorite park instead of drive and I love that we are minutes from downtown.

Like clockwork, my faith as been restored and I have a passion for something even I am unsure of yet ok with because I trust He does. It’s a pretty neat thing when you look in your rearview mirror and see the bumps you have hit and how you are still driving forward; maybe a little bruised and maybe a little hurt, but the wheels keep turning and bringing you to where you need to be.

P.S. - What does your new beginning look like?

7/18

Monday - Body Pump

Tuesday - 5 mile run

Wednesday - 7 mile run

Thursday - 4 mile run

Friday - 4 mile run

Saturday - rest

Sunday - 14 mile run

I am officially moved in to my new place which means no more stress headaches caused by the looming cloud of "you have so many things to move" floating above me. I introduced my new roommate, Nicole, to Body Pump on Monday. The first time is always awkward (in part to the routine and fast paced switching of the weights) but she killed it and did awesome. Always a bonus working out with your friends!

On Thursday, Alissa and I drove 14 hours to Minnesota so I knew I wanted to get my training run in before we left. I'm glad I did because there was no way I would have been able to fit it in by the time we reached our lake plus I could barely walk after being in the car that long.

Today was my (dreaded) long run of the week. I have never run farther than 13.1 so when I say I dreaded this run, I mean it. Since I am at the lake, there are no sidewalks or real trails to run on which made it a little tricky to figure out a course. My dad biked next to me which was SUPER helpful. He kept me company, encouraged me when I would let out a swift "Oh my God!!!" after him telling me we were only on mile 5, and carried water to keep me hydrated as it was humid as HECK out. One thing I most certainly don't miss by being out in Denver!

What do I miss though? The simplicity of lakes country: rollings hills, endless green fields, and a blue sky to top it all off.

In case you're wondering how I felt at the end, I think this picture speaks for itself. Let's just say I'm happy it's over but do get a slight panic attack knowing my mileage is only going to keep increasing!

6/18

Monday - Body Pump

Tuesday - 3 mile run

Wednesday - 5 mile run

Thursday - 3 mile run

Friday - rest

Saturday - 9 mile run

Sunday - 5 mile run

What a busy week it was all in part to moving into a new place. I technically didn't "rest" on Friday as I spent the majority of the day carrying boxes and furniture up stairs. I'm more than happy to be in my new living space but man, moving is just one of the worst. things. ever!!

On a completely different note, I hate feet. Always have, always will. If you put your foot in my face to  be funny I will punch you in your face to even things out. When it comes to my own feet, I have noticed that they have taken quite the beating due to running 5 days a week. What better way to make them pretty again (for a little while at least) then to treat myself to a pedicure. Nothing, that's what.

P.S. How do you treat yourself?

Three-Day Cleanse

When my friend asked me to do a 3-day cleanse with her, I figured I would give it a whirl. I’ve read testimonials from people that have done one, and their “added energy” and “absent sugar cravings” always made me question and wonder if they were getting paid to make these comments or if they were true. The only way for me to find out was to try one myself and I knew if I had Taylor suffering through it also, we could get through the 3 days without punching someone, surrendering in a tub of ice cream or fainting before noon. #buddysystem

So - much - chicken/turkey/tilapia  (Hi Santa!)

Meals for one day

Before I give you a breakdown of how the past 72 hours went, let me preface this by saying I’m not gullible. There are many people who do a cleanse to lose weight and I want to give those people an eye roll (let me remind you I grew up with three brothers so I've had it mastered since age 4). I am at a healthy weight for my body type so did not agree to do this to shed pounds. More than likely you will lose weight because hello you are drinking juice, cutting your calories exponentially, or eating low-carb foods. Keep in mind the second you go back to “regular” eating you will gain the weight lost right back. #reality

Here are the 6 meals that I ate everyday for 3 days. The only thing that changed each day were the steamed veggies. Throughout the cleanse I had broccoli, brussel sprouts, green beans, and yellow squash.

Meal 1:
1/2 C oatmeal
2 egg whites
1 tsp. coconut oil

Meal 2:
3/4 C chicken
1/2 C yam

Meal 3:
3/4 C tilapia
1 C steamed broccoli

Meal 4:
3/4 C chicken
1 C steamed brussel sprouts
1 tsp. coconut oil

Meal 5:
3/4 C tilapia
1 C steamed brussel sprouts
1 tsp. coconut oil

 Meal 6:
3/4 C turkey
1 C steamed green beans
1 tsp. coconut oil

What I liked:
  • never felt starved or deprived from food
  • overall felt "lighter" - lost 2.4 lbs
  • not as bloated
  • my stomach issues subsided
  • meals were pre-made and pre-planned which helped me stay on track
  • discovered I LOVE steamed yellow squash and yam with cinnamon sprinkled on top!
  • was eating food every 2-3 hours (I could never survive a juice cleanseI need grub!)

What I didn't like:
  • tired and exhausted (to the point of wanting to go to bed at 5pm) by day 2
  • not eating carbs made running with little to no energy very, very miserable
  • craved the slightest sugar - a strawberry, a grape, anything!
  • low-blood sugar symptoms kicked in on day 2 and 3 so I snuck in a spoonful of peanut butter to prevent any fainting episodes
  •  was drinking water 24/7 which meant I was in the bathroom quite often
  • Coconut Oil - oh my! I had to plug my nose when "eating" it. Not for me!
  • Temptations:
K enjoyed fro-yo while I enjoyed…water.

K wanted to walk through the candy store so I did…reminding myself that I don't even like chocolate.

When doing a cleanse, don't pick up a food magazine that has an entire 2-page spread on ice cream.

It wasn't as terrible as I thought but I'm not sure I would it again. Who knows, though, I always love a good challenge! To end on a humorous note, K made this to sum up how she felt having to deal with me through it all.

P.S. Have you done a cleanse? If so, did you like/hate it? Comment below!
