Friday Favorite: Breakfast

Breakfast is not only the most important meal of the day but it is also my favorite. I have become a morning person thanks to this meal and the routine that I have while enjoying it - watching the Today show and sipping on that magical potion we call coffee.

I have a couple staple breakfasts that I cycle through:

1. Oatmeal

I use to gag when eating this mush of a "cereal". That is, until I discovered it's a whole new ballgame when you add stuff to it. My favorite add-ins? Blueberries, Banana, Cinnamon, and the occasional scoop of protein powder.

2. Protein Shake

After a workout, sometimes a warm breakfast just doesn't fit the mold. That's where the ice cold protein shake comes in! Water, ice cubes, protein powder, and whatever else I feel like throwing in -blueberries, banana, strawberries, PB2, oatmeal, spinach, chia seeds - endless possibilities and combinations, people!

3. Egg Whites

Egg whites were that food that I had never tried but swore I hated. It wasn't until recently that I have fallen for a good egg white scramble topped with salsa. Another favorite is using them as a topping on toasted Udi's Gluten Free bread.

4. Fruit

When all else fails, also go "back to the basics". Cut up fruit thrown in a bowl and sprinkled with PB2 - hey sexy!

5. Rice Cakes

As a previously featured "Friday Favorite", rice cakes spread with PB2 and finished off with a sliced banana is surely a reoccurring hit among my taste buds.

Question & Comment: What is your favorite breakfast food?

  1. 1. Never been a big oatmeal person, unless you count the instant oatmeal that comes in those packets that all you have to do is add water or milk or what have you & POOF, breakfast. I haven't had it in ages, though.
    2. I have yet to visit that place that you told me in town, I think it's called Island Fusion? I will make an effort to at least stop in there though. :)
    3. egg whites seem like a big hassle to me, though. I mean, separating the yolk from the white part seems very messy. I tend to not be able to do it, at least the times that I've tried it. Suggestions to help with this? I know that egg whites alone are healthier...
    4. I don't often have fresh fruit sitting around my apartment. does frozen count?
    5. I would think rice cakes would be a bit bland, would they not? One of those things for me that is well intentioned, of course, but gets shoved to the back of the cabinet or thrown away because it's been there too long & therefore is going to waste.

I tend to either have cold cereal with milk, a bagel, or leftovers from the night before. Not the healthiest options, I'll admit. You've given me some things to think about. :)

    1. 1. I was NEVER an oatmeal person until one day I took a leap of faith and tried it with some extra kicks. I'm telling you, it's a whole new (and tastier) meal!
      2. A for Effort : )
      3. I buy the egg whites from a carton so they are already pre-drained from the egg. Makes life much easier and less messier!
      4. Frozen fruit is fruit so yes...it counts!
      5. They are bland if you don't put stuff on top - hence the PB2 and banana.

Thank you for the comment and I hope my comment back helps!
